Recognising and applying numbers in their numerical and written word form is an important goal in forming a mathematically literate student.
The written word form of numbers innately includes the assigned place value of the number.
A common point of confusion is where to place the “and” within the number set.
For instance, 2018 is pronounced and written as “Two thousand and eighteen”, whilst 2108 is pronounced and written as “Two thousand, one hundred and eight” with the and placed before the tens and then the units respectively.
This is best taught using variations of the “Words to Numbers” lesson, using the provided flash cards which have a floating “and” card which the student must place correctly.
Using the Place Value Number Generator, you are able show the written form of a number.
A number generated in numerical or dice form be toggled to reveal the words.
A number generated in word form can be toggled to reveal the numerical form.
This has many applications to variations of the competitive “Place Value Shootout” games which use words only.
A student conducting self study can use the generator readily to verify their answers using the web app.
